Satchmo At the Waldorf – Reviews

Not very often do you have the opportunity to be completely captivated by a theatre experience. To be so inspired by performance that you come out different by the end. Dwight Mahabir does just that in Prospect Theater’s presentation Satchmo At The Waldorf. In this one-man show, Dwight portrays Louis “Satchmo” Armstrong, nearing the end of his days and performing at the Waldorf Astoria in New York City. Dwight is absolutely incredible in this show. He completely embodies the late musician with ease, charm and a whole lot of soul. The honesty in which he delivers his dialogue is truly a master class in acting. As an audience member you are right there in Satchmo’s hotel room, listening to his stories of hardships, triumphs and heartbreaks. Another highlight of this show is Dwight’s portrayal of two other characters, Joe Glazer (Armstrong’s Manager) and the legendary Miles Davis. Dwight seamlessly transitions between each character
with the click of light cues. His mastery of all characters is truly a delight to behold. When he slips into Miles Davis, you’d swear the famous trumpeter was there in the room. The stage was simple and elegant and the lighting design was on point. Jack Souza did and absolutely fabulous job of directing this piece, bravo to him as well.

I could not recommend this show more after I saw it. I laughed, I cried and was truly inspired as an artist. Rarely do I come out a show feeling that way. It was
truly one of the best theatre experiences I’ve ever had.
